Contact UsCommon Signs of Infestation in Your Rug
If you notice any of these signs in your home, be sure to contact a professional rug cleaner team for further analysis and removal.
- Bare Spots in Wool Products: One of the most common items rug beetles munch on are wool or wool blend rugs. While it can be very difficult to see the larvae with a naked eye, you'll know they are there when spots on your rug become thin or loose. Outside of rugs, you're likely to find damage, such as holes, to wool clothing or blankets.
- Bald Areas of Furs: If you have animal products in your home outside of wool, keep an eye on them for bald spots. Carpet beetle larvae will feed on trophy heads, taxidermized animals, furs, or even bristle brushes. The bald spots will appear because the larvae munch on the base of the hairs, causing them to fall.
- Larva Skins: As the larvae grow, they will shed their skin several times and leave clean casings. They are likely to accumulate in areas where feeding occurs. The most common places you'll find them are under rugs, under furniture, or in areas where pet hair and lint collect.
- Spotting a Carpet Beetle: As the larvae mature into adults in the springtime, they will do everything they can to make their way outside so they can mate. To do so, they tend to migrate toward the light. If beetles are present, you'll likely spot them on walls or window sills where the sun shines.

We identify infestation damage easily because we see it all the time. Before major damage occurs, we will look for warning signs like larvae casings (cocoons or webbing) that signify the larvae are about to hatch. We’ll also take note of sandy material in the pile of a wool rug, showing that larvae have already begun to feast on your rug. Your expensive antique rug can be rewoven, but it’s a very expensive option if the damage is larger than just a few square inches. It’s always best to catch the damage as soon as possible!
